Edward scissorhands essay conclusion

Film The story of Edward Scissorhands was intended to be much more than your average meaningless film. Furthermore, the film portrays how society judges others based on appearance and puts the reality second.

The Oldie | Virginia Ironside

Tim Burton, the director of the film, develops upon this point, as it is a crucial theme in the film, and exposes the viewer to the true consequences of the bias judgment that occurs in our society. Edward Scissorhands also presents the conformity and social normality that society has been adopted.

Edward lives in a distant mansion, resembling the Gothic architecture located on a mountain that is severely detached from the society surrounding him and is made clear through camera anglesand his home is Gothic, haunting and features a darker palette of colours, unlike the other houses in suburbia that are presented in mid-shots as colourful, but also similar and never-changing.

His physical detachment from society parallels his social isolation as he is marginalized on the bias judgment brought upon by his physical appearance and his disabilities.

He is consistently polarized between social conventions and himself, and the pronounced differences are evidently outlined without any attempts made to disguise or deny the anomaly. During panoramic shots of the garden of Edwards manor, we are shown his creative talents, whilst maintaining the theme of his differences, his isolation and thus imposing Edward as an outsider.

Take Peg, an Avon lady who works only to feel like she is doing something with her life other than lounging and gossiping, in which no one supports her efforts. Kim too, is an outsider because she defended Edward when no one else would, because she saw him as a person instead of a deformity to be avoided.

Appearance and reality is a very crucial theme to the text, as it is relevant to the moral of the story and its presence is found throughout the novel.

The idea of appearance and reality is evident in our very first impression of Edward and the mansion. Edward is portrayed to the viewer as a horrific and evil character, thirsting for deviltry, as it is made through music.

He is first shown in a long shot crouching in the shadows of a ruined mansion. He has a dark leather costume with studs and buckles.

His messy hair, scars and scissor hands reinforce the intimidating monster like appearance, reinforcing his disfigurement. The dynamic lighting displays Edward in a shadowed, dark area and Peg in the bright, and his appearance brings upon sinister music.

However, from the way Edward walks to his first word and facial expressions, the viewer gains the knowledge that Edward is actually harmless, and in reality, Edward is more gentle and caring than the majority of the town, and this is displayed through dialogue.

From this we see that he thinks with his heart first, and his noesis second; his family is more important to him than right from wrong. In many instances, Edward is childlike.

It is a message to the viewer as what should be acted out in the real world. There is a tone of sadness and melancholy in the voice of Edward and it is more prevalent when he is less confident, and from this we feel sorry for him because through his tonal voice, we gain the understanding that Edward feels sub-human, thus making us sympathetic.

A sense of sympathy is evoked in a series of scenes where Edward is alone and isolated in contrast to families and people with human contact. The most powerful example is when suspicious neighbors start to stare at Edward during a long-shot and view him as a novelty.

IN addition to this we sympathise with the prejudice he faces as an object or a freakish show-piece initially feared and then used for personal gain. Furthermore we feel pity for Edward after some brief token acceptance he is once again cast away into isolation and is marginalized, once again viewed as an alien.

Conformity is evident throughout the film as the protagonist Edward is constantly deviating from the social conventions and normality. His physical appearance, actions and emotions differ him from the other characters and Tim Burton makes this clear through music, camera angles and lighting.

Conformity is evident from the very scene in which Edward enters society, in which all the ladies of the town begin rumors and gossiping, which shows that the societies entity follows the same standards and rules, thus proving a culture has been developed.

A culture that excludes outsiders such as Edward who are different in the slightest way, who do not follow the expected path, and excludes those who do not provide for society.

The society in Edward Scissorhands clearly displays acquiesce and assent. Everybody is scared about being isolated, marginalized and alienated like Edward, so they follow and accept the bigoted beliefs adopted by others, as no one is brave enough to attempt change.

We even see connive occurring when Edward is tricked into committing a robbery crime on behalf of his peers, in an attempt to conform to the rest of society. As a film maker he captured his detachment from society through the tonal shift in music and lighting, as well as camera angles and the clear xenophobic actions taken upon by the society around him.A Written Study of Edward Scissorhands - A Written Study of Edward Scissorhands In the film Edward Scissorhands, Tim Burton creates a suburban fantasy by explaining his interpretation of what it is like to live in a suburb.
